The History of South Wharf & Showtime Events Centre

Showtime offers the perfect environment for your corporate functions, personal celebrations and special events. A complete bar, catering service and versatile function space gives you the opportunity to put on a show that will impress. Showtime, formerly known as “Shed 11”, has been meticulously restored over the past few years. What was once an industrial installation has become a lively and stylish venue for the denizens of Melbourne.

The venue’s heritage gives it a unique atmosphere; contemporary, yet distinctly established. Many original features have survived the shed’s recent history, such as the roof trusses, the chamfer timber posts, the timber buffer boards along the lower section of the wall and the beautiful detailing on the eaves. As well as Showtime’s unique interior decoration, the custom-built bar features exquisite overhead chandeliers and polished features.

Location Location The Docklands

The unique location of Showtime allows its guests stunning views of the Yarra and its associated docks. The area encompasses a distinct combination of industrial, maritime and metropolitan environments to provide a comfortable, uplifting atmosphere at your event.

Many buildings along the docks are heritage listed, preserving the history of Melbourne whilst creating an inimitable social environment.

One of the benefits of being situated in South Wharf is our close proximity to Melbourne’s CBD and the Hilton Hotel ideal if you desire a venue with comfortable accommodation nearby.

The History of South Wharf & Showtime Events Centre

Showtime is situated on the area once known as Duke’s Dock. Stretching for five kilometres along the bank of the Yarra River, the dock serviced ships entering the river mouth, ending just below the Queen Street Bridge. Today, the area has little resemblance to how it was when it was the centre of maritime and industrial activity at the turn of the 20th century.

Originally constructed by J. McCann in two parts, the shed complex was designed to serve Melbourne’s burgeoning import/export industry. The Western half was constructed in 1884, and was followed by the Eastern half around three years later. During the 1890s, the shed was often referred to as ‘The China Shed’ due to the number of Chinese and Japanese ships that were usually berthed there.

In the late 1920s, Shed 11 was used for customs purposes and was associated with large overseas cargo ships. In the decades that followed, the shed housed shipping offices and a port workers dining room. However, sometime in the 1970s a large part of the Western end was demolished, and in 1989 the shed was completely gutted by a fire. It has since been restored into what now stands as Showtime, the South Wharf’s premier events centre.
