Showtime is situated on the area once known as Duke’s Dock. Stretching for five kilometres along the bank of the Yarra River, the dock serviced ships entering the river mouth, ending just below the Queen Street Bridge. Today, the area has little resemblance to how it was when it was the centre of maritime and industrial activity at the turn of the 20th century.
Originally constructed by J. McCann in two parts, the shed complex was designed to serve Melbourne’s burgeoning import/export industry. The Western half was constructed in 1884, and was followed by the Eastern half around three years later. During the 1890s, the shed was often referred to as ‘The China Shed’ due to the number of Chinese and Japanese ships that were usually berthed there.
In the late 1920s, Shed 11 was used for customs purposes and was associated with large overseas cargo ships. In the decades that followed, the shed housed shipping offices and a port workers dining room. However, sometime in the 1970s a large part of the Western end was demolished, and in 1989 the shed was completely gutted by a fire. It has since been restored into what now stands as Showtime, the South Wharf’s premier events centre.
